Why WestCana?

Health and Safety

Focusing on Prevention

WestCana will foster an environment that is safe for everyone. This will be demonstrated through our attention to safety in the delivery of services as well as being an active partner in the site joint OH&S program. WestCana’s Health and Safety Program is focused on prevention. All of our policies and procedures are well understood and acknowledged by our staff and we have been very successful in reducing the risk of injury to both staff and residents. When an injury does occur, WestCana has a Return to Work Coordinator that manages all WorkSafe claims and programs. Our group of Companies has an Occupational Health and Safety Committee which meets every six to eight weeks to discuss issues that affect us company-wide as well as site-specific issues that arise. WestCana also actively participates in the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee(s) at every site where we provide service. We ensure that all committee members receive the proper training and education to be successful members of the OH&S team, and often utilize the Employer’s Advisors Office as a resource for education. Our Occupational Health and Safety Program is measured by the following:

  • Number of WCB claims
  • WorkSafe BC orders
  • Results of inspections
  • Number of injuries/incidents for employees
  • Lost time due to injuries

Also, at every WestCana site, there are programs in place to ensure that Health and Safety remains at the forefront of people’s minds. For example:

  • All monthly staff meetings include a Health and Safety component
  • WHMIS is conducted annually at every site, either by the Support Services Manager, or by the Corporate Health and Safety Specialist
  • Infection Control in-services conducted on a regular basis to ensure staff know and understand the importance of PPE, as well as hand and personal hygiene
